The Fine Jewelry by Kevia Story
Kevia Jeffrey-West's exposure to the world of fashion began at the ripe age of five, a period often spent admiring her mother's clothing sketches and playing with fabric swatches. Over time, she developed an eye for color, contrast, texture and detail: skills she now uses to design her line of jewelry and handbags.
Jeffrey-West began developing jewelry for her personal collection while studying in Zimbabwe as an undergraduate at Lewis & Clark College in 1997 and 1999. She collected locally mined and cut stones, sketched designs, and found local jewelers to make her creations.
In constructing her vast collection of ornate handmade and cast jewelry, Kevia’s eye for detail and quality means she utilizes only the finest quality precious and semi-precious stones. Her design focus is meticulous metal work and custom cut gemstones. Influenced by her travels to Africa, Europe, and India as well as her ongoing exploration of mixed media art, the designer’s collections draw both from art history and culturally diverse metal smith techniques.
My approach to designing and cooking are similar: I prefer to make things from scratch. About a year after I began selling my line I decided to prioritize sourcing raw materials rather than buying components from manufacturers. I design nearly everything used in my line, which allows me to create pieces that reflect my design aesthetic. Manufacturing from raw materials gives me more control over quality and enables me to employ artisans that specialize in specific techniques.
My signature metal finish is a matte 22K gold plate which took me about a year to develop. My goal has always been to offer fine jewelry quality designs that are affordable, and I think the high karat finish makes the pieces feel more precious than traditional 14K gold. While I respect the advances we have made in modern jewelry fabrication, my preference is handmade work both because it feels strongly tied to the earliest jewelry making techniques and each piece is slightly different and thus one of kind. I also enjoy studying art history and tend to draw on architecture and antiquities for inspiration.
